College Advancement
As wins come, they don’t come anymore satisfying than Kansas City Kansas Community College’s 48-47 upset of Johnson County in Jayhawk East women’s play Saturday night.
Not only did the win snap a nine-game losing streak at the hands of the Cavaliers but somewhat avenged an earlier controversial overtime loss at JCCC when the Cavaliers scored on a game-tying three-point on a deflection, steal, dribble and shot in the final 1.3 seconds. The loss also dropped JCCC (6-4) out of undisputed possession of third place in the Jayhawk East.
KCKCC never trailed in the second half and had a 48-45 lead with 36 seconds left only to have JCCC score and then get two chances to win after the Blue Devils missed a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining. Danielle Shows, who led all scorers with 15 points, missed from short range but JCCC got the ball back when KCKCC deflected the rebound out of bounds with 2.6 seconds to go. Shows’ shot to win it came up short and Sarah Craft came away with her seventh rebound to sew up the win. Cameron Roland scored 11 points and Craft, Ashleigh Gallio and Shannon Carlin 7 each for KCKCC. Gallio also had nine rebounds and five assists.
The loss snapped a five-game losing streak for the Blue Devils, who had held Coffeyville (9-1) to a 30-30 halftime deadlock before losing 72-61 at Coffeyville on Wednesday. Kristian Dodds had 20 points including five three-pointers and Kelsey Stanbrough 15 for KCKCC. Both were career highs. Gallio added to her assist lead in the Jayhawk with eight.
MEN TUMBLE – A late KCKCC rally came up short as Johnson County’s No. 11 ranked men (Division II) held on for a 61-57 win on Saturday. Rory Spencer, a 6-8 soph, had 20 points and nine rebounds and pre-season All-American Nafis Ricks 19 for the Cavaliers (15-6), who won the rebounding battle 34-27. Derrick Denny had five three-pointers and 17 points to lead KCKCC while Jack Shortell added nine points and seven rebounds and Derrick Howard eight assists. JCCC led by 11 points with four minutes to go before KCKCC closed to within four.
The Blue Devils also staged a comeback at league-leading Coffeyville (9-1), trailing by only six points with six minutes left before falling 76-55. Denny again had five three-points and 17 points and Shortell added 10 points and five rebounds for KCKCC.
Blue Devil teams now go on the road for three straight starting Saturday night at Allen County before returning home to host Independence Feb. 18.
