The Campus Child Care Center at Kansas City Kansas Community College will join readers all over the country in the national Jumpstart’s “Read for The Record” Thursday, Oct. 8.

“We plan to do our part in helping break the world record for the largest shared reading experience ever while also working to break the cycle of illiteracy,” said Doris Holleman, Director of the Child Care Center.

The Center’s participation will start at 10 a.m. when KCKCC Librarian Penny Mahon reads from the campaign’s official book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” In addition, teachers and children at the Center will be webbing literacy, science, math, music and cooking into their learning curriculum throughout the entire week.

“The Child Care Center staff is encouraging not only students but all citizens in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties to help make early education a national priority Thursday by visiting www.readfortherecord.org and read the official book, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Nationally, more than one million children and adults are expected to team up to help break the world record for the number of people reading the same book on the same day and draw attention to the early education crisis affecting millions of at-risk young children in the U.S. and across the globe.

Jumpstart is a national early education organization that helps children develop language, literacy and social skills. This year’s read-in is Jumpstart’s fourth annual and for the fourth consecutive year, the Pearson Foundation will donate more than 250,000 copies of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” to children in need.
