KCKCC Graduation May 21; Ged Graduation, Nurses Pinning May 20

The Kansas City Kansas Community College Field House will be commencement central Wednesday and Thursday, May 20-21, when three graduation ceremonies will be held in a 30-hour span.

The annual GED Graduation will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday with a record number of Nurses Pinnings at 8 p.m. and KCKCC graduation ceremonies on Thursday at 8 p.m.

David-Malcom McGruder, a junior Political Science and Religion major at Morehouse College, will be the featured speaker at the Thursday graduation ceremonies.

A 2006 graduate of Washington High School, he was licensed to preach at Salem Baptist Church at the age of 11 and since that time he has spoke at numerous conferences and conventions including the National Baptist Convention, Congress of Christian Education, National Youth Leadership Conference and leadership conferences at Yale University and Georgetown universities.

McGruder currently serves as youth minister at Metropolitan Baptist Church in KCK and has served as an interim for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/KCK. The son of Marlayna and Phillip McGruder of KCK, McGruder will on completion of his undergraduate work seek a Masters of Divinity and a Doctorate of Theology with concentration on the social praxis of Liberation Theology.

Approximately 550 graduates will be receiving diplomas. Degrees will be conferred by J.D. Rios, chairperson of the Board of Trustees; President Dr. Thomas Burke and Provost Dr. Morteza Ardebili. Music will be provided by the KCKCC Concert Band directed by Jim Mair.

GED GRADUATION – Monica McGlory, who graduated with a GED in 2007, will deliver the main address at GED Graduation ceremonies Wednesday at 6 p.m. An On Track student who received a Community Education Scholarship following her GED graduation, she has since received a Dean’s Scholarship. A business major and an honor student, McGlory has been an officer in TAASU this year and will be an officer in Phi Theta Kappa in 2009-10.

NURSES PINNING – A record 86 nursing graduates will receive their pins in pinning ceremonies at 8 p.m. Thursday. The graduates will include 57 from the main campus and 29 from the Technical Education Center. Judy Ingrasin of the Nursing faculty will address the graduates.
