College Advancement
Certification programs to prepare students to enter the fields of Medical Coding, Dental Assistance and Pharmacy Technician will be offered at Kansas City Kansas Community College this fall.
The Medical Coding Certificate program will begin on Monday, Oct. 5; the Dental Assisting and Pharmacy Technician certificate programs will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
Offered in cooperation with Condensed Curriculum International, the programs:
MEDICAL CODING – An 80 contact hour course, it will focus on the fundamentals of assigning codes as well as developing coding skills used to identify diagnoses and procedures in inpatient and outpatient hospital settings. In addition, students will learn the history, format and use of coding in index and report creation, prospective payment and other types of reimbursement systems and how to determine and correlate and diagnosis and produced codes in preparation of insurance forms.
It is recommended that students without job experience in the medical field complete a medical terminology course prior to taking the class. The class will meet in Room 2606 of the Flint Building from 6-9:30 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday from Oct. 5 through Dec. 14 as well as 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on two Saturdays, Oct. 24 and Dec. 5. The cost is $1,499.
DENTAL ASSISTING – A 60-hour program, Dental Assisting prepares students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions. The course will familiarize students with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide training in the professionals required to function as an assistant in a dental practice.
The program does not include a national or state certification objective and does not prepare the student to be a “Dental Assistant with Expanded Duties,” which requires job experience and additional training. The program will be held each Tuesday and Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. starting Oct. 13 and running through Dec. 10. The cost is $1,199 and includes textbooks and materials.
PHARMACY TECHNICIAN – A comprehensive 50-hour course designed to prepare students to enter the pharmacy field as a technician working in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings working under supervision of a registered pharmacist. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.
The course will also prepare the student to take the national certification exam administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certifications Board. The class will begin Oct. 13 and be held each Tuesday and Thursday from 6-9:30 p.m. in Room 3632 of the Flint Building through Dec. 3. The cost is $999 and includes textbooks and materials.
Financing options are available for all three courses. All are eligible for WIA funding through the local workforce office and KCKCC offers a monthly payment plan.
