Sophomores Austin Etling and Jared Berman were as expected as aces of the Kansas City Kansas Community College pitching staff as they hurled the Blue Devils to a sweep of St. Mary’s junior varsity at Leavenworth Wednesday.

A righthander from Derby, Etling scattered five hits in a 5-inning 20-1 opening win while Indianapolis native Berman pitched five scoreless innings as he and freshman Hunter Benton combined on a two-hitter in a 6-inning 12-2 nightcap win.

Nate Wilder drove in five runs with a double and two singles in the opener while Cavett Bright singled twice, tripled and stole three bases and Blake Stroth tripled and scored five times. Catcher T.J. Lorson had three singles and Cale Replogle two as they combined for five of the Blue Devils’ eight hits in the nightcap.

The Blue Devils resume action Monday at Rockhurst at 3 p.m. and then open Jayhawk Conference play at Labette Saturday, March 7, before their home opening doubleheader against Highland Tuesday, March 10, at Mid-America Sports Complex.
