They ran out of tickets at the annual Wyandotte County Ethnic Festival at Kansas City Kansas Community College Saturday.

“We ran out of tickets at 4:30 p.m. with more than 850 persons having walked through the door and more people interested in participating in this year’s festival than ever before,” said Coordinator Curtis V. Smith. “Clearly, the festival is one of the best entertainment values the county has to offer each year. It is like taking a trip around the world for free while celebrating our common humanity in Wyandotte County – human diversity.”

Smith said more than 60 countries, ethnicities and local organizations were represented along with eight ethnic food vendors and one ethnic coffee vendor. The festival was highlighted by the presentation of “Legends of Diversity” awards to Barbara Clark-Evans, Director of the Intercultural Center at KCKCC and Dr. Eyyup Esen of the Dialog Institute Southwest located in KCK.

Clark-Evans also serves as senior consultant for HRH Global Connections, and works with clients in the Major Clinic, CentrCare Health System and Wells Fargo to create their strategic plans, refine their human resource practices and drive operation solutions that drive performances. She has two master’s degrees - one in Business Administration from Baker University and one in Education and Curriculum Design from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Born and raised in Turkey, Esen received his doctorate in education from the University of Kansas in 2015. His principle research is in cross-cultural communication studies. At the Dialog Institute, he organizes a variety of events to promote peace and dialog, which includes an annual dialogue and friendship dinner, brunch lecture series on Saturday mornings, an interfaith academy, cooking classes and water marbling art classes.

In addition to KCKCC, principle sponsors of the Ethnic Festival were the Unified Government of Wyandotte County Depart of Human Services, El Centro and KKFI 90.1 FM radio.
